    Guess That Hurricane!

To summarize from Wikipedia: Aurthur - formed 5/30, maxed at tropical storm, hit the Yucatan Peninsula, $78 million damage, 5 killed Bertha - formed 7/1, maxed at category 2 hurricane, missed everything Cristobal - formed 7/18, maxed at tropical storm, skimmed Georgia and South Carolina...

    Extremely Controversial end of democracy

Pretty good, except the revolt of the proletariat (poor folks) is what Marx first wrote about, making it true communism. This system would not necessarily have a fascist ruler, and could really rule by any system, as long as it was fundamentally egalitarian (equal rights for all) and classless.

    Extremely Controversial Gay Marriage

I agree pretty much across the board with Bob, but would like to call attention to one little section: Aside from the overlooking of Zoroastrianism, the main problem I see here is that marriage is a specific legal bond in addition to any religious connection. A civil union grants some, but not...

Hyperbaton - a figure of speech in which words that naturally belong together are separated from each other for emphasis or effect The use of commas brackets off the majority of the Amendment as clarification text. With the removal of the hyperbatons, the remaining words need no clarification...

    Somewhat Controversial Testing on Animals

The reasons are sciency. Mice are sometimes too distant genetically for any data to be meaningful, and so other species must be used.

    Somewhat Controversial Testing on Animals

Ah, but where can we draw the line? Rats are ok, but what about dogs and cats? If that's too far, can we test on reptiles? What about the green mamba, whose intelligence rivals said dog's?

    Gun Control

Ugh. The Second Amendment is an antiquated holdover from the time when the occasional coup was a good, even necessary, thing to prevent the government from growing too powerful. The appositive clarifying the rights of a militia to its regulated armory cannot be applied to ordinary citizens in...

    Best Anime/Manga Character

As per official canon, Lawliet was L's last name. His actual first name was... L. Yes, I'm serious. That aside, add Simon (and possibly Kamina) from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Simon wasn't that cool in the first part, but was sheer badass post-timeskip while Kamina... was Kamina. 'Nuff said.

At least until the robot uprising. Aaaaand that's ten posts so... Topic change! Artificial intelligence - my bet is that we'll see it within 50 years. Any thoughts as to what's going to go down?

*major spoilers* PH's Ending VS WW's Ending

Reset Button Endings are frustrating, but I didn't particularly mind PA that much. At least it wasn't Ganon again.

    Extremely Controversial Iraq War

Allow me to be less subtle: my allusion to WWII and Nazi Germany was intended to show the dangers of consensus in addition to the more obvious point, as a lack of additional viewpoints leaves only one biased perspective. Neither the Republicans nor Democrats, communists nor capitalists...

    Do you believe in God?

Re: Do u beleive in God? Sorry, my last post left a bit to be desired and so I have removed it. Upon reflection, a better response would have been this: Where do atheists come from?

    Somewhat Controversial Testing on Animals

But is it moral to kill high-intelligence animals to speed research that could be done bloodlessly? As for the article, Wimbledon could simply have hired more hawks. If they were effective in clearing the court, why not use more to secure the remainder of the grounds? The use of hawks...

    The Enlightenment Thread... 2!!!

Without technology, none of us would be alive today. Well, some of us would be alive, but the global population never would have cracked 100 million.
