The guy got something like 20% of the vote and most of it was expected to go Bush.
18.9% actually. Clinton won by 5.6%, and would only need 35% of Perot's vote to maintain a lead. 'Most' wouldn't be enough to save Bush.

Actually William Henry Harrison died in exactly a month so you're wrong.

March 5 - April 4. Thirty complete days, one partial day. As most of his term was spent in March, we can measure a month as 31 days.
31 > 30.[whatever]

And Reagan got Alzheimers later in his life, proving that the chances of McCain getting it this early are slim.
*sigh* Regan was positively diagnosed with Alzheimer's in '89. He showed definite syptoms in '87 (while still in office). He was 78 and 76, respectively. McCain is 72. Four years would put him at... any ideas?

Ooooooh. So you're saying that Alzheimer's disease doesn't affect someone's ability to be president.

Because Reagan was one of our greatest presidents.
I'd listen to Dakare on this one. I think he recently had to do a research project or something of the sort on the condition because he sent me a PM a while back asking for good databases to look into :D.

Alzheimer's is a genetic disorder that can begin expression at any time during your life in either a slow or face paced expresion. It is possible he had a mild case of Alzheimer's in office and still had the ability to conduct his life. My Great Grandmother had Alzheimer's since the early 80s, but she did not start really disfunctioning until 1994.

BTW I love Reagon, I just wanted to get the facts on Alzheimer's straight ;).

No one can argue that Reagan is one of the greatest presidents of all time... also, he was an actor, making him even cooooler! But age shouldn't affect how you act in office unless you croak...

But remember, everyone's biological make-up is different. Just because Raigan was strong enough to be president doesn't mean someone else will be.

Exactly, Reagan was an abnormality. People here are assuming that because Reagan was past 70, and able to function in office, (still debatable) anyone will.

??????????????????????

Well I already explained this but ah well...

McCain has been through so much these past few months campaigning non-stop in order to have the chance to be the President of the United States. And you think he isn't physically and mentally able to be president? Also, the guy was tortured for several years. If that doesn't prove great mental stability i really don't know what does.

What is with the horrible spellings of Reagan in this thread?
Reagon?
Raigan?
-_-

"I am No Man."

Reagan was bright, yes, but I would not by a long shot consider him 'one of the greatest presidents'. Let's look at what he did:

Reagan fixed the economy.

By doing what? Jimmy Carter may have f'ed the country up, but did it take a genius to fix it? What was Reagan's brilliant strategy? Reganomics. Which is a fancy word for laissez-faire. Which is a fancy word for doing nothing. America will recover on its own, assuming no more government action is preventing it. Oh, and what about the stock market crash of '87? You know, the largest single day drop in history? He might not have been able to prevent it, but his solution hiked the national debt from $700 billion to $3 trillion.

Reagan cracked down on illegals.

The Immigration Reform and Control act made it a crime to knowingly employ or assist an illegal immigrant. It also automatically granted amnesty to over 3 million illegals already in the country.

Reagan destroyed the Soviet Union.

There are two ways of looking at this: either the SU was an "Evil Empire" whose destruction was just, or the SU was being forced into capitalism by financial disaster and the collapse of the power base was an inevitable result of such an economic shift. The first view is childish; the second, debatable.

And to top it all off is the Iran-Contra Affair, where the Reagan administration was found to be selling arms to Iran to finance an illegal war in Nicaragua specifically forbidden by the Senate. Reagan denied any involvement, but hey, if the guy couldn't keep his own people under control he deserves the blame.

P.S. to Animaldude: WTF is up with your avatar!?!

  1. Actually it's a French word for doing nothing.
  2. The Soviet Union was a threat to world peace.
  3. It's not hard to find a picture of Hilary Clinton looking like a psycho. Coincidentally, I had just changed the avatar right before I read your post.

Had the Soviet Union actually taken over the entire world they would have created world peace.

Why are you bringing this up again? Communism does work. It's the rest of the world that doesn't.

Like I explained to you, campaigning is nothing compared to the office of the president. Again, even if McCain is mentally stable now, that is no gurantee a few years from now. Tortured? Many American soldiers were tortured, do you think they should be President?

Well then wouldn't that mean it doesn't work???

Communism would work if the human mind would allow for it.

Communism=great idea

but only if our minds would allow for it

oh, and animaldude, laissez-faire does not mean do nothing...it means 'let do'

It would work only if the entire world was communist.

And the Soviets weren't communist, for the ******* billionth time.

i didnt say they were....

if the whole world wanted communism it would work, but i doubt the entire world wants that....

even if it happened, there will always be rebels, and thus no peace

Rebels? Against what? Everyone is happy in communism.

Not the hard working doctor that isn't making as much money as the garbage man.

For example, why did thousands of people try to escape East Berlin to get to West Berlin?
And while we're at it, how was West Berlin able to turn into an incredibly industrialized society from basically nothing after WWII while East Berlin lagged behind them?

They would make the same amount, not more or less. In order for a functioning society everyone must have a job, and all jobs must be filled, including garbage man and doctor.

Thousands tried to escape from East Berlin because they were under harsh circumstances there, not because of the communism.

German Berliner Mauer barrier that surrounded West Berlin and prevented access to it from East Berlin and adjacent areas of East Germany during the period from 1961 to 1989. In the years between 1949 and 1961, about 2.5 million East Germans had fled from East to West Germany, including steadily rising numbers of skilled workers, professionals, and intellectuals.

So why were just the skilled workers leaving if everyone was experiencing harsh conditions?
